Went to the firing range today with my 1911 clone and I saw a used 80 series 1911 (1991A1), on display for $430 US. The first thing I asked was "what's wrong with it? why is a used Colt selling for $400." I see them on gun broker for a lot more.

He said nothing was wrong with it, just a consignment sale. I asked to see it and it looks like it is in great shape. I cock the hammer and pull the trigger and the pull is short and crisp and lighter then my clone! After doing that 2 more times, I'm in love. And I ask if I could put $100.00 down to hold it. I'm going to sell some other firearm to purchase this one.

Before I complete the purchase I want to read through some of the stuff on this site about buying a used gun and I want to field strip it.

It sure felt like a keeper to me!

Buh, it's no good. What's the telephone and the address of that range you saw it at?

Dude,
Unless you open it up and it is empty inside it is hard to pass on nice Colt for $400.
Heck even then, a few springs and such and you are in business ;)
Serious, the only thing (at that price) I would want to check is to make sure that the previous owner did not "correct" (read that butcher) the Series 80 safety system. If he did, you will have to get that corrected at your cost. Anything wrong with it that is manufactoring, I think it was 1990 when Colt started their "lifetime" warrenty? Or was that 2000?
Get the serial number, and call the nice folks at Colt, they will tell you what year it was born.
Congrats on the great find.

There is nothing wrong with a 1991 Colt. That price is a bargain.

Sounds like a great find. I am partial to Colts and I think you will be pleased. I would check it out and be sure everything is good to go but at that price it could have a few issues and still be a great deal.

Just checked out local gun trader to see what's in their online edition for 80 series and found this:
Colt 1911 Government Series 80. 45 ACP. Pair of 8 rnd mags, Pair of 7 rnd mags, reloading dies and lots of extras. $550 Firm.

Not too bad a deal at all, unfortunately it is about 2hrs from me, but I may swing up, would need to come up with a good excuse for the wife though. I don't have any 45 dies so it would some in handy. Difficult to say without seeing pics for condition. I still like yours for $430 though!

Wow! A $400 colt is unheard of in these parts. You better snatch it up.

Buy it. If you find anything wrong with it, let me know and I'll take the burden off your hands for $50.

That is almost too good of a price. Silly question but, are sure it is not hot, like stolen, right?

Well, I'm buying from a well known company in my area, they have several ranges / gun shops. I guess anything is possibile though. Don't really know of a way to find out for sure or not.

Yeah that sounds like a smokin' deal. For comparison I saw a new 91A1 Commander (SS) recently in Gander Mtn for $839.00

Put a 100 round Through her. Not a hick-up. After field striping it I can just see the difference in fit and quality between this gun and My budget priced clone.
