View Full Version : Put 'enhanced' Gov't back to stock.

Ok, I think I am done now. I bought this Engraved Colt a few weeks ago. Well, some things had to be changed to work for me. Of course the stock Colt grip safety had to go, so I put in a Wilson drop in. Then I needed a short trigger so that was next, then a combat extended mag release and I tossed (not really, all of the stock parts are being kept in the original box) the plastic mainspring housing and installed a flat Pachmeyer. Took out the full length guide rod and replaced it with a stock plug and guide. I tried it that way for a while and liked it, but I really (REALLY) appreciate the stock Government 'look'. So I found a Gov't grip safety (series 70, had to do some filing to make it an '80' series) and hammer. And it took forever to fit a stock thumb safety to the gun but I have that now and it just clicks into place; zero sear movement. Next I needed nice grips with a gold logo. I tried the rubber and that was ok for shooting, (yes, it's a shooter!) but didn't look very nice so now it wears a pair of Coco bolo with a gold logo. It is wearing a Pachmeyer arched mailspring housing now, but I will have a stock Colt steel arched one on it next week. What do you think? 44 Man

I may put a Colt blue steel trigger that I have on hand in it. But I really like the feel of the STI with the overtravel adjustment.

Me, too. I like things ORIGINAL. Many moons ago, I had to have everything unique, but I grew out of that. Last year I spent some time putting a Hungarian SA85M carbine back to original. I did alter a Hungarian M44 carbine (no big loss) into a sporterized 'scout' rifle, and I have had one Colt Government Model (1953) refinished by Bill Adair. It had been polished and blued at least once. Bill refreshed all the markings and put (at my request) a 'brushed' blue on it similar to the pre-war Colt M1911A1. I think your Colt looks a lot better in almost stock configuration, and I have similar grips on my Mk IV Series 70, keeping the original ones back. There's always room for a little 'pizazz' within the 'original' envelope, and grips with the Colt medallion certainly fall within that. You know, I think this calls for some pics, but I need to take some new ones. Maybe tomorrow after the sun comes back up.

Version 3 is nice but I actually like Version 2 better ! Either way a beautiful Colt.

Nice piece, I actually like the trigger in version 3 but the grips in version 2. But it could just be the glare in the pic that makes the logo on the grips clash with the barrel inlay?? Regardless, looks good!

Actually Ed, the logos are almost identical to the gold in the inlay, it's just the angle of the camera, I can never seem to get the lighting quite right. No Lloyd, I won't ship my gun to you, but you can come over and shoot it. Besides, after all those marriage proposals to Joni Lynn, you're going to be way to busy to shoot anyway! Ah Ha! 44 Man

I like the way it looks now with the original style hammer and grip & thumb safties. The medallion grips look great as well. That trigger is not my favorite for looks, but it's somewhat lost in the overall good looks of the gun.
Nice!

Very nice. Don't like the plastic trigger, but since it's yours and not mine . . .
