Hello, I have a Colt Commander and wish to put a beavertail grip safety on it. I have seen Wilson Combat sell these and Chip Mccormick sell the ones that are so called drop ins will these work? I have heard you had to mill some off the back ends? Also is their a 1911 gunsmith around in PA?

I thought the 1991 Commander comes with a beavertail?

Howdy,
From hearing on the forum from knowledgable members, Wilson makes a drop in that looks good, doesn't require frame modification. Be aware that some adjustment may be necessary for correct functioning. Other member will probably clarify.

Wilson makes two drop-in beavertails, one for Commanders and one for Government models. The drop-ins do not require modifying the frame, it's the fitted ones that require you to radius the tang behind the hammer. But you may need to do some minor filing on the grip safety arm for proper mating with the trigger bow.

If you're skilled to be able to install the Wilson drop-in beavertail grip safety then go for that one. As Hawkmoon had mentioned you need to file the grip safety arm for proper engagement with the trigger bow. I use the Wilson drop in b'tail GS in my commanders.

I just installed ( yesterday ) a new Wilsons Drop in Beaver Tail Grip Safety on my 1991 Commander. It was easy with the directions Wilsons supplies with the part. It took about 45 min for me to do. Firs time and I did not want to remove too much material. I actually had to smooth the inside of my frame and the outside of the Grip safety to get it to engage and disengage properly. That means not actually removing material but smoothing it out ma dnot removing the parkarizing(sp). That is how tight the drop in part is. It will help if you have a good set of callipers to compare what you have now to what you need . Shot it yesterday and it shot great not a hitch. Now for a trigger job.....
