Ok, I am probably going to buy my dad's Rock Island Armory 4" and am wondering if a Wilson Combat drop in beaver-tail will fit it, or if I will have to take it to a gunsmith to have it done. It will end up being my carry pistol, and its better to have modifications done by a gun smith if they require any grinding on the frame where I live (probably everywhere really).

I'll say jump up to the RIA bunch and do a search. Lots of the guys there have changed out the beavertail. I have not changed the grip safety on mine. And most drop-in parts need fitting.

well, since my dad decided to keep it, the info is for him. i will just tell him to bring it to a gunsmith to get it done since it will be his carry pistol.

And just a thought, try to fit the part to the pistol ,not the pistol to the part.

I don't know about the compact RIA, but I put the Wilson drop-in beavertail in my full-size RIA and it was a perfect fit. I didn't have to do anything to either the grip safety or the gun. It took all of 10 minutes to disassemble, install and reassemble. Pics of it are on my website, here: http://users.adelphia.net/~navy87guy/RIA45.html There are few pics down the page that show the fit of the beavertail.

YMMV.
