Does anyone have an idea what this gun would have sold for new in 1979? I have seen several on numerous websites in the $800-$900 price range.
Just trying to determine the appreciation on an investment.----I know, you can't put a $$$$ value on the POO factor(Pride Of Ownership).
It's a Domestic conversation at home, get my drift? :nono:

$285 in '77, and $353 in 1982. It was up to $600, in 1985.
I remember dreaming, as a teenage boy in 1976, of being able to own a Detonics Combat Master, which then cost more than a Gold Cup ('76 retail price was $399 on the Combat Master). Twenty-five years later, I was able to buy a new (unfired) Combat Master for $530, which in real terms, was half what it cost when it was made. Guns don't usually appreciate, even if the number to the right of the dollar sign gets bigger over time.

Why shall we remove it? You have started a new thread, so all is OK.

A very dear friend sold me his 1979 manufactured colt government for what he paid for it new, $350. I told him that it was worth more than that but he said that he knew that I would keep it. It probably hadn't had more than a couple hundred rounds through it. That was 10 years ago.

Thanks for the info. I just sorta guessed that it may have been about half price of what they are on the market for today. The value is a little less than trippled in 27 years.

Colts are always a good investment. That is what I tell myself when I buy another one Then my friends will point out to qualify as an investment you must be willing to sell, which ain't very likely.

Well, that's where the POO factor comes in. It separates the havers from the buyer/sellers.
You can can look at your saving account statement and all you see are numbers. You can look at your 1911/1911a1 and see history and see numbers.
Just my perceptition.

Mark; the thing is, Mk IV Series 70 pistols are just starting to take off. On a graph, it is a curve, not a straight line. It only tripled over the last 25 years, but it will double again in 10 more. The reason is, everyone is waking up to the fact that the 70 is the last of the Colt true commercial M1911A1s, all forged steel with a lineage straight back to John Browning. It was all over when they started putting the firing pin safety in along with cast, MIM and plastic parts.

Thanks 191145, but don't tell anyone else. I'm going to try and pick up a few more.

A local dealer has one(MKIV Series 70) for sale. It's as new in box in 100%, unfired condition. The bluing is beautiful. Slide to frame fit is excellent with very little horizontal/vertical play. Trigger is excellent. Original box, hang tag, warranty card, manual and magazines. I'd like to pick it up. What do you guys think it's worth? I know what they're asking for it, however, I'd like to get your opinions before posting it.
Thanks for your help.
Mike.

If it was mine, I probably wouldn't take less than a grand. It's only going to appreciate.

Pete, thanks for responding. The dealer has it listed for $979.00 plus tax. As I've stated earlier, it's an awesome looking pistol with all of the original accessories, box and paperwork. Does this sound good?
Thanks.
Mike.

Buy it. But first make sure its a real one, not the new repro. Go by the serial number and barrel markings.

Also by the sights and nylon MSH.

Did all the MK IV 70's come with the serial numbered barrels?

No, I've had a few and have never seen one with a serial numbered barrel.
