View Full Version : My New 1911 Gov't Model (Pic)

I took this pic just before shooting this gun for the first time. It came in new today and I was anxious to pick it up...but, I did switch the grips out for some with medallions as soon as I took it from the box. The grips that came on it were really great with double diamonds, checkering and nice patterned grain. But, I like Colt Medallions.
It shot well with federal 230 grain hardball using the two Colt supplied mags and two Chip McCormick 8-shot ones.
It's Just the basic MODEL-O1991 (series 80) Government Model .45 ACP, New Roll Mark and I'll keep it that way.
I like it, I really really like it... :D

There is no such a thing as "just a 1911". Everyone is different, every one has its own soul.
Count me in too, I like a set with a medallion too. Where can one get them?

I had a set with gold medallions around here, but they just didn't look right on that Pimped Nork...so I threw'em away. :scared:

Hey Johnny,
I had to spend it (plus more) somewhere instead of on paying bills and buying groceries. Did I leave a set of Colt Medallion grips (checkered, medallions, no diamonds) over there somewhere? I can't seem to locate them. :nono:

Colt Medallion grips ROCK!! I have a set on my Gov't model. They look like the same ones you have.
Have a look:

I bought mine from a local shop for $40 but they have a bunch of them on ebay for about $35 plus shipping.

My Gov't model also came with the most beautiful grips I have ever seen, but no logo's! I'd like to have a pair set into these grips but for all practicality, I'll probably just buy a set from CDNN. $25 plus $10 shipping. A nice set of Gold logo Coco-bolo grips sure would look grand on her! Of course the ultimate set is not available. A 'thin' set of Coco grips with the gold logo!

Now that's a fine looking Colt! How'd you get the slide so scratched up? :nono:
Just kidding of course. Some grips with medallions would look good with the gold "Colt" on the slide.
CDNN does have great prices, except for their shipping charge...makes me want to buy more than I need.

Do you shoot it or is it just an heirloom?

My only complaint about the old or new 1991 series guns is that god-awful way too long trigger- put a short tirigger like on the gunsite guns in them- even a big handed person can shoot a short trigger gun but it is very hard for a person with smaller hands to use such a long trigger- besides from a practical standpoint shooting outside in cold weather with gloves on it makes much more sense to

...that god-awful way too long trigger...
I agree on the long trigger...kinda takes away from the "classic" look as well. I might change it out someday...

Great site OD!! :D
Just added that to my favorites. I'm going to a store today to look for a set of Colt grips with medallions but if I don't find any, I'll be ordering from them.
Thanks for the info....

Truer words were never spoken. Those are all really beautiful guns with individual souls.
I lucked out last week when I found this MK IV Series 79 Government Model "unfired, new in box, with manual" that had been in an estate. Guess it was bought but the owner never got around to shooting it before he cashed in his chips.

Nice Colts, everybody. I found CDNN's website while browsing a few days ago, could not make up my mind if I wanted mediallon grips for my commander or not. After seeing the pics I do! hope they have a big inventory, thanks for the help.

Hey! I just ordered a set of medalion grips for the engraved Gov't. I can't wait until I receive them! I have now fitted a regular thumb safety to the gun, and I want to install a Gov't hammer and grip safety also. Probably should have waited on the thumb safety until I was done changing hammers. Oh well, I have more thumb safetys. Then it will be time for more pictures!!!
