If I have to ship my Springer back to SA, do I have to go through an FFL to get it returned? Don't have to do it yet (hopefully never) but just wondering.

No, you can ship to them directly by common carrier, UPS or FedEx, however, you must ship it by Next Day Service or they will not do it. The US Postal Service will not let non FFL holders to ship a handgun, period.
