Do you need authentic GI, or just the appearance? Sarco Inc. has thumb safeties that are pretty close to the real deal. Go to www.sarcoinc.com then hit search and use 1911 as the search term. The first hit will be the parts list.

thanks hawk...i went to sarco and since there were no photos i will trust your judgement. to answer your question the "look" would be close enough, however the genuine article would be cool....and probably start a long journey on the road to build the rest of the gun around it
:D

My "Frankengun" was built using a Sarco parts kit. Here's a picture that shows the thumb safety (which looks out of place on this pistol ... but it works):

Much better than it has any right to.

I believe this target was shot at 15 yards.

oh i dont know....sometimes i think we allow ourselves to be influenced more by trends than we should and forget the traditions.
looks like it shoots pretty darn good though. ever put a light on it?
it looks like you did a pretty good job.
by kit, was that one of those everything but the frame and slide kits. the slide looks like one of their "current manufacture"...if so how was it dimensionally?

There's some discussion of this gun in the Gunsmithing forum. It was not an "everything but the frame and slide kit," it included the slide, too. And it is one of the Sarco "current manufacture" slides. Initally I bought a frame and used the entire kit. Subsequently, I changed out a few things.
Frame is Caspian, so the rails started out slightly oversize and I gently shaved them to the slide so I don't know if the slide would be loose on a "standard" frame. The slide doesn't quite match up with the back end of the frame -- slide is too short by maybe 1/32" to 1/16". It's a shooter not a collector's item, so it doesn't bother me (unless I look at it).

well thats the point of it all isn't it, to have a shooter. funny though, my wife says the same thing about me ("he doesn't bother me unless i look at him")...just kidding...she is a good sport who likes to shoot....what a deal...it only took 3 tries to find a wife who liked to shoot....before she met me she never held a gun.
i am going to check out your threads in the gunsmithing forum. i thank you for the info.
