View Full Version : New to the 1911, Last round jams

I just purchased my first 1911, Moving from my S&W 645. I got what I thought was a pretty good deal on a series 70 marked "colt competition" on the right side of the slide. It has a Wilson Combat Barrel and Bushing, some type of adjustable trigger, extended beavertail and skelotonized hammer, and wilson combat recoil buffer, everything seems tight on it and very clean. I went to shoot it yesterday and everything was fine until the last round, when it always jams, on all three mags. the last round jams pointing straight up between the barrel and slide. My first instinct is that the mag springs are weak, but I thouhgt I would ask the gurus here incase I am missing something. Also it jams on blazer ammo, but I figure that it is just not hot enough.
Here is a pic of the gun

mhidpa, what weight recoil spring does it have? and what mags are you using?

Normally, last round jams are an indication of weak mag springs. As jb45 asked, might be a problem compounded by a weak recoil spring.
Should be a 15/16# recoil spring and many manufacturers recommend replacing 1500-2000 rounds on full size guns.
Wolff springs can fix you up with all the springs.

Swampertwo nailed it square on the hittin' spot. The malfunction described is a classic Bolt-Over Base misfeed. The slide is outrunning the magazine and catching the upcoming round in the extractor groove instead of at the rear of the rim. Usually occurs on the last round. A too-heavy recoil spring can be a player, but it's generally the magazine spring that's at fault.

I have no idea what # recoil spring I have, as I got the gun used. The mags I am using are wilson combat 8 rd with the plastic base plate. Should I get wolf springs or the Wilson springs? Also will using a recoil buffer mean I need a different spring? WHat is the consensus if there is one about recoil buffers. Stupid questions I'm sure but I am just learning

I would replace the mag springs with the wilson rebuild kits and the recoil spring with a 16# Wolff or ISMI spring. I'd not worry about the recoil buffer unless the slide is 'hammering' the frame- and that should be taken care of with the right recoil spring.

Replacing the springs on a used gun, is always a wise precaution. Do as you are told, replace the recoil spring and see how it works.

I would definitely start with a new spring set, you might as well replace them all, since they are cheap insurance. I personally have chosen to go with Wilson Combat for my 1911. Good luck =)

At any rate...Bolt-over-base is a magazine spring tension issue, and the standard Wolff springs won't work with the 47D followers without modification...and I don't advise that. If I'm not mistaken, Wolff makes a set specifically for the 47D but Brownells doesn't carry'em. You may have to call Wolff directly for the springs.

Luck to ya!

Brownells does carry the W/C rebuild kits for both the Wilson 47Ds (P/N 965-266-245). I don't see just a replacement spring for the W/C with the plastic follower other than the above, maybe Wilson can tell you.

Does the rebuild kit include an extra-power mag spring? If not, it won't help much...or at least not for long.

Johnny, neither Wilson nor Brownells literature actually says they're extra power-Wilson's says "maximun tensile strength", but that is not 'extra power'.

Dunno...Whenever I wind up with a 47D, I gut it and install standard a follower and a Wolff 11-pound spring. No mo' prollems! :p

Im here now........been up to my ears in a crashed airplane........workin' with FAA and NTSB.........UGH!

Anyway...........Colt armorer class aint til the 20th of next month. As for the teaching part........weeeeeeeeel.........will have to see what they say, and how they remedy things.........if they get too far out, will have to set them straight!

Now.......for them Wilsons. They have had a batch of bad springs awhile back...........but got that figgered out fairly soon after.

Got a new nick name for Johnny......."Dimples" :D

To add to the mix I would toss the shok buff. I ran into all kinds of problems with my Para and my Nornicos when I put a shok buff in them. Slide would short stroke and had case jams as you describe but not always on the last round. Shok buffs can also play havoc with your slide stop. If I am going to shoot heavy loads then I'll go with a heavier recoil spring. I suspect most of your problems will disappear with a new recoil spring without the shok buff. If that doesn't work then I would go with spending money on mag kits.
