View Full Version : Brownish blemishes on nickeled slide

Firstly, I apologize that this is not a 1911 question but I know how many knowledgable people frequent this forum and was hoping that someone may be able to help me out here.

I have a Smith & Wesson Model 59 that I bought new back in 1977. The entire gun was originally dark in color: blued carbon steel slide and highly polished black alloy frame. In about 1979, I sent the gun to S&W to have the slide and several other parts nickel plated.

The gun still looks great and has been my "nightstand gun" for years. The other day, I pulled it out to clean it (it had been a while) and found very small brownish colored circles on the side of the nickel plated slide that was facing up when the drawer was opened. These marks look almost like a fine spray of some sort of liquid hit the slide in different places and dried. They are NOT pit marks, as, if you turn the gun at an angle, the finish appears very smooth. I tried letting BreakFree CLP sit on the area for a while and used substantial "elbow grease" but cannot remove these blemishes.

Is this how rust pitting starts, perhaps? Any ideas on how to remove these ugly marks from my otherwise beautiful pistol?
