Over the past year, almost every boy in our neighborhood between 10 and 15 years old has purchased one or more spring powered airsoft guns. Most of their parents know nothing about guns. As a result, the kids started out treating their airsoft guns like toys. They wear eye protection, but they handle them rather carelessly.
I told my son that his airsoft guns are real guns, and took the opportunity to train him with the real thing. My father, my sister and I took him to the range and showed him how to handle a couple of 9mm Glocks and a 22 S&W revolver. I bought a Kimber 1911 frame 22 and a Marlin 39a just for taking him to the range on a regular basis. (Yes, it's a second childhood thing for me... I'm thinking of getting an airsoft gun so I can join their game!)
I started a campaign to educate all the kids in the neighborhood with the standard NRA rules, and it is working so far. None have objected, and they don't mind talking to me about the rules. Most of them can recite the top 4 rules. I've spoken with some of the parents, and they like the idea (mostly because they are clueless).
We have one local airsoft rule that is very important: When traveling, kids must unload and conceal their airsoft guns. I told them if I catch them going down the street with a gun in their hand, I will take it from them.
Now, If I could only find biodegradeable pellets, all would be well! Anybody know of a source? My yard is full of little bright plastic BBs! Why can't they make them out of fertilizer?
