I bought my SA 1911 last year, It was sold as a WW2 Mil-spec, then was changed to USGI or so I was told, and no one can seem to answer that definitively. What is the difference between Mil-Spec, USGI and WW2 mil-spec and then 70 series and 80 series?

I just know mine is a full-size 5"

Series 70 and Series 80 normally are Colt designations for their pistols. The Series 70 had a collet bushing, the series 80 has firing pin safety features. These are not normally on a SA.

Call SA directly and ask the differences in their designations. SA is friendly and should be able to help.

Mil-Spec........has large sights, a semi funneled mag well, and the ejection port lowered a bit.

GI......small sights, no funnel to the mag well, small ectection port.

Those are the basic features.......I also think the GI has a arched main spring housing.

Ok, that helps alot, I will call Springfield, I have before, but they didn't seem to want to help much when I was looking to lower the strength of the Mainspring. However I just put a colt mainspring in mine and it dropped the trigger pull pretty good, just where I like it. Mine has an arched mainspring housing, small ejection port and ramped feed ramp, with throated barrel, but the grips were standard knurled plastic, did not have wood with GI stamp in mine. With your help I think that the difference between mine was that it was WW2 mil-spec and then they put on the wood grips with GI stamped in them and changed the name to USGI then. Thanks for the help Wichaka, I will still call SA and talk with them.

I'll be heavily modifying a WWII mil-spec. I'll keep a thread going on this board with updates.
