View Full Version : Blue rubs off after one day of holstering

I just finished my first tactical class with my new Les Baer TRS, which has a blue finish. I am using a blade tech holster (plastic competition holster -- very fast). I put about 300 rounds through it, and probably drew/holstered it 100 times. I've noticed that a small about of blue has rubbed off the slide at the muzzle:

I don't really mind it, as it gives the gun a nice bit of character which reveals actual training/use for its intended purpose. I'd just like a reality check here: Does this seem normal? This is the first blued gun I've ever had that has seen any significant holster use.
By the way, I've got my eye on a nice Mitch Rosen inside the waist ban rig, so there will be new and different wear marks in this gun's future! ;)

:scared: I kinda figured that the Bladetech might be more abrasive than leather.

It isn't that the Bladetech is more abrasive than leather, it's that the Bladetech with some dirt is more abrasive. With plastic holsters, there is no place for small bits of dirt to go and they stay on the surface of the plastic and rub against the gun. With leather, the surface is uneven and soft so some of the dirt is "buried" in the leather and affords a little more protection.

Adam, believe it or not, Kydex will wear the finish quicker than a leather holster will. When dirt gets in the Kydex it forms a type of "sandpaper" type surface. So, it's not unusual to experience this type of finish wear so quickly.

If that's 100 draws, the finish is holding up remarkably well. I loaned a gun to friend, and he drew/reholstered maybe 20-30 times, and the gun was worn to bare metal in three or four spots.

Get a small bottle of Brownells' Oxpho-Blue, some Q-Tips, and some 000 steel wool. Daub the Oxpho-Blue on the bare spots with the Q-Tip, wait a bout a minute, wipe it mostly dry with an old tee shirt, then burnish with the steel wool. You can make that bare spot virtually disappear.

Maybe, just maybe your bottom adusting screw is too tight. Wear should show earliest at trigger guard, as that's what secures the handgun for retention. Glad that you have recognized that a using piece shows the effects, they can't stay new looking and be used. When I see a handgun showing at least some wear, I know that this is a working piece.
Listen for the click that secures the trigger guard, adjust to the point that the handgun will stay in holster during reasonable amount of shaking while held upside down.
