New GRP owner

Well, I took delivery of a new GRP today. Not a recon, & no Crimson Trace Lasergrips. Plain Jane 1911. Yeah, right.

I have little experience w/ custom 1911s, but this thing is sweet beyond verbal expression. Mine has slide top serrations between the sights, & I changed the green grips in favor of the Nighthawk red/black micarta VZs (just to be a bit different.)

I'll post pics ASAP, but preliminary judgement is that it's easier to justify spending the money on a fine piece of craftsmanship my great great grandchildren should be able to enjoy. If it shoots as good as it looks, they can count on a repeat customer.

Has anyone put a Dawson rail on their NHC?

Second, congrats on your new gun. I am sure that (as you say) your grand-children will enjoy it too.

Third, yes please post the pictures of the gun with the VZGrips, I want to see them. And don't forget....

Finally, even though the Dawson rail is a very nice piece of equipment, and either Dawson or Craig at NHC can sell you a Surefire X200 to go with it, I won't install such a device on the GRP. First of all you will have to permanently alter the gun (and it is a pity to alter such a jewel), then you will have a hard time finding a holster for it, unless you are intereted in a tactical holster which mounts to the side of your leg.

If you want a night gun, get the Recon one, with the integrated frame rail.

Or even better, practice night shooting holding a flashlight. There are multiple techniques that have differing logic behind them.

Took it to the range today - somewhere between 150 & 200 rounds & not one hiccup. Safety is a bit tight, & frontstrap checkering is a bit aggressive, but not uncomfortably so. All in all, it's just different from the Kimbers, Springers, & Colts I've shot w/ & I'm extremely happy w/ my new purchase. I may return the green grips, as I think I like the look of the red better (kinda reminds me of wood & I like the retro contrast.)
As far as the Dawson rail goes, the reason I leaned towards it was because it'll fit in most standard GM holsters w/ very minor "tweaking"; otherwise, a railed dustcover will take a proprietary holster. Still undecided on that, though.

I'll get better pics up ASAP. The last pic doesn't do the top serrations justice & I forgot to take the digital camera to the range w/ me today.

The Dawson rail is a nice piece of equipment, but take my word for it. A 1911 with that rail on, WILL NOT fit in a standard 1911 holster. I've tried several holsters I have and the only one I managed to fit it in, was a strange design one, which was send to me some years ago, by a German holster maker. In Horseshoe holsters, there was no question about the gun going in.

The Dawson is smaller than the other rails, but it's still big enough to require a special holster. And so far, the only company which is willing to make one for a Dawson-rail-equipped 1911 is Bladetech.

dbwebbsr. That's a very nice pistola you got there. I have a couple of question for you if you don't mind answering them.

1. Is the top serration standard on the GRP?

2. What is the trigger pull on it.

On the website, it said between 3.5lb to 3.75lb per the new GRP II, but nothing on the GRP Recon which I've ordered recently. Thanks in advance. :D

Kinny, the slide top serrations aren't "standard" - the dealer I got it from told them he wanted something different when he ordered it. I can't give you an exact pull weight in the trigger, but it feels to be around the advertised value & very, very crisp w/ absolutely NO creep. Best 1911 trigger I've ever used. Period.

NYCMedic, the grips are quite comfy (they're logo'd VZs.) I was using gunners, but they were chewing up my paws a bit.

I promise better pics after the range session this coming Saturday...
