View Full Version : Occasional Fails to RTB with SWC Blazer

Let me first start out by saying that I know this is ammo related. The question I have is it worth 'fixing'?

I occasionally get a fails to return to battery with Blazer 185 grain SWC. The case will hang up and won't go to battery. The case edge is hanging up on the inside of the barrel and the aluminum case is getting gouged - also the bullet will seat back noticeably when this occurs.

Now I know that this is cheap ammo and that the SWC jacketed is not roundnose - So, I am guessing that I shouldn't shoot this stuff anymore. But, is there something I can do to make this and any other ammo feed properly so I don't get this problem? Is it the aluminum case that makes this happen?

Thanks,

Jim

When you say gouged... crescent-shaped dent right around where the heel of the bullet is?

FWIW, dad and I used to pump gallon bags full of SWC through his bone-stock S70 when I was a kid. No problems at all. I get some funny results from Blazer, too. I wouldn't be shooting blazer if I didn't get a slidelock in the middle of the magazine at least once per box. Wacky stuff.

I have the same trouble with my Springfield high cap with the 185 SWC. Doesn't do it much but It will do it and with only SWC. The Springfield will feed everything else no problem but she does not like SWC. My Colts will feed the SWC well though. I emailed 1911Tuner about it and he gave me some suggestions that could help. Relief cut by the extractor to help the case slip under the rim and some feed ramp work I really do not care for SWC anyway and decided to keep them away from my Springfield.

Thanks for the advice. I got this twice today out of 200 rounds. It tends to happen as the gun gets gunked up. I think it is really related to the case. The aluminum seems to be thicker than regular brass, and I truly feel it is related to that. Also, when the bullet seats back, the case rim is there at the front and I think it will end up catching. I think I am going to stick with brass from now on (after I finish shooting up this case) and stick with JHP or FMJ/RN - I really feel that I can get something like the lessened recoil when I shoot something with low FPS in 230gr.

I just ordered some lancer remanufactured 230gr FMJ with a 757 fps rating. This stuff is just slightly more recoil by the numbers than the 185gr Blazer so I think it will be great for IDPA.

Thanks for the inputs :)
