I am assuming that w/ an ambi safety, the main spring housing and all that internal stuff must come out in order to take the ambo safety off, right?
No other way?

Take the right grip off ,remove the right lever, then remove the safety from the left side in the normal fashion(cock hammer, lightly pull outward and upward on the safety till it comes out)http://forum.m1911.org/images/icons/icon10.gif

most have a tongue and groove type setup and it might be snug try putting a piece of rag in some plier jaws and pull firmly on the lever close to the rear of the safety to get as straight a pull on the pin as possible(not too hard) If that doesnt do it try finding a post from tuner an PM him. Might be sumthing I dont know about that Im missing here

It depends on what kind of ambi you have. If it has that tongue which goes under the right grip panel, follow what has already been posted. There are other variations though, so let us know what your ambi looks like, or on what pistol it is installed (if it came from the factory with one).

I got it out - it is a toungue and groove type - Thanks for the help. Before I screwed with it too much, I used the good ol' fashion "search", and I found more info on it, and even some pics. I was then comfortable on trying. I ended up using my swiss army knife underneath the right side and got it out without any marks.
