i was reading a older thread where a man got his father a 1911. he kept referring to the park finish as he was keeping it oiled up.
i was lead to belive that the park finish was a very durable finish and needed no oil.?.
some one help me out here . i have a park finish on my RIA but i am in the prosess of getting that off for a nice blued finish. a 1911 should be blue or ss. any help would be nice

Parking has to be oiled. I don't recall exactly how the process works, but it's a porous finish that will hold oil against the metal so that it never corrodes. When it is kept oiled, it is very corrosion resistant. When it is dry of oil, the parking will hold other liquids, water for instance, against the metal. Obviously that is a Bad Thing(tm).

Can't necessarily agree with that as many, many 1911s did great service in a "Park" finish which I like anyway. In fact, I like 1911s in EVERY type of finish ! :D

Park does hold oil well and that plus it was one of the first (if not the first) of the finishes made to resist not only rust but also wear.
