View Full Version : Scallop shapes edge of barrel lugs - Kimber Ultra CDP

I have a 2004 Kimber Ultra CDP II that now has about 1000+ rounds through it. It started life a little troublesome and gradually improved it's reliability trend until around 650+ rounds or so it became reliable.
When cleaning under a very bright light I noticed some scallop shapes in one of the barrel lugs that I cannot explain. The pistol runs fine. Is there any reason I should have any concern over this?

Peek into the slide at the corresponding lug abutment surface to see if the shapes kinda sorta match. If they do, it looks like that lug is bearing the recoil forces and has deformed under pressure.

Close inspection of the slide under a very bright light shows that it does not have any corresponding wear indicators. In fact it is a sharp edge that looks freshly machined after all these rounds.
Is this an indication of "no worries"? :o

Probably so...as long as the scalloped lug doesn't show any sign of flanging at the top front.
Dunno what caused it. That's one of those that I'd hafta see firsthand...

Is the face of the lug scalloped or is it scratches on the top?

Kruzr,
No, no wear marks... Some polishing off of the NP3 coating (that you can see in the photo...). Nothing on the face though, just some wear on the top surface. You can see it in the photo, but that looks normal to me, like many semi-autos...

To be more specific Kruzr, The face of the lug looks freshly machined, no wear. This is true of the barrel as well as the corrosponding location in the slide. The slide has absolutely no signs of any wear any where. The lugs all look freshly machined with with nice crisp edges on the lugs... The slide polishing that the slide has done a little on the top of the barrel (that you can see in the photo) looks like my other Kimber Ultra and Colt Officers bbl. as well as the barrels on my two Kahr pistols...
Maybe I'm OK with this one?!
