hope this is the right forum... has anyone used one of these? if so how tight was the magwell with the bottom of the frame? i want to replace the arched mainspring housing on my springfield with a flat checkered piece and thought a magwell wouldnt be a bad idea to do at the same time.

First off, going to a flat M/S housing is usually a good thing, demanding on the anatomy of your hand. Going to this type of M/S housing may necessiate a small modification to your grip. The base of your grip will be closer to the base of the weapon. I, personally like the flat M/S housing, but then, I am a purist when it comes to the 1911.
Regarding the expanded magazine well, I have one on a Colt Commander. It is a Wilson and it is fine and properly applied, fits snugly. My view of them as a useful add on ....is forget it... safe your money. They really are frivolous and serve no advantage to completing a rapid tactical reload, as the "gun rag writers" claim. Just dry practice a your tactical reload with an index of your index finger of your support side hand on the top of the magazine and point that finger at the front of the magazine well and the front strap. With a reasonable amount of this dry practice and you will be able complete a rapid and smooth reload without benefit of this silly AM add on. Try your tactical reload in this fashion before you spend money on an add on that will not make you anymore faster or consistent at this technique. Good luck.

I'd like to see how one attaches to a gun - can someone show a pic?

I just like the looks of a magwell, myself...

with theres it looks from the picture like the mainspring housing has a cut on each side that the mag well slides into...then installs like any normal mainspring housing with a pin.

Here is one installed on my pistol...

Has two ears that slide into slots on the side of the MSH, and is held in place with the MSH pin...There is also a small set screw on the botom you use to add tension and take up the slack... If I do another one, I think I will go with the S&A... They are a little wider on the outside, so theysit almost flush with the grips, and they have a better bevel in the well area....

S&A= Smith & Alexander... http://www.smithandalexander.com/ The S&A is a one piece unit, so there is no place to get slop... My wilson has a small gap between the frame and the well, but that is my fault... I had to open up the holes in the ears a little to make it go on smoothly, and I used a crappy drill bit. It opened up the holes too much... Ed brown makes a cool one that is removeable via an allen head set screw.... http://www.edbrown.com/cgi-bin/htmlos.cgi/00674.1.566718241226535276
