Hello all, I just purchased my first RIA 45. Paid 340.00 out the door, and I've got to say this was a great deal. :) I have 7 other 1911 style 45's, Kimbers, Colts, And S&w's. I was very surprised at the quality and and how well this thing shoots. 250 rounds not a single problem. I love it!!! :D

Well let me be the first to welcome you aboard. Now, how about posting some pics of that new Rock Island? Gotta watch it around here, or somebody will hit ya with the "This Post is Worthless Without Pics" wiffle bat. Hehehe.

Lemme tell ya, the very first thread I started here, the site owner posted the first reply with that goofy "This Post is Worthless Without Pics" graphic of his and I didn't know whether to laugh or cry having El Commandante hitting me with that as the first reply I ever had on the site here.. LOL You'll see one show up next post or so, I won't steal that from them. Hehe, great group here and always room for another new 1911 addict. ;)

LOL, yeppers, there it is! You can't go and report a new gun without giving us a pic.... still trying to figure out with the RIA why that is neccessarily so, one RIA Gov model looks pretty much like all the others, until the bug strikles you and the custom mods begin. Mwahahaha

True, but hitting up the newbies with the :wl: is a right-of-passage around here. I swear, it's the only reason John even added that emoticon to the Forum. :D

Yes, yes... I have to admit, I posted a write up just the other day and failed to provide pics for like the first time in ages. My keyboard was still warm from the typing and pow!!! John's smacking with the :wl: hehehe. What's funny is I almost felt the shadow of that smacking loom over as I clicked submit. Hehe. Sure enough. I turned around and it plowed into the thread full force. LOL Gawds I love this place. :D

If you post that new pic here you have a ref for a before and after set when you start those mods.. ;)
And seriously, I've been noticing a few ppl hinting at changes to the RIA's. Not to mention, they ship out with some REAL pretty stock grips..

TxStorm, All...

Hee hee, LOVE the discussion about the emoticon! That aside, gotta say... that I LOVE the smooth, thick, well-finished wooden grips on the two RIAs that I bought (one, mine; the other, my old man's, and he almost cried when I gave him it for Christmas)... My Rock, I am NOT going to re-grip as I did my Springer Mil-Specs (I HATED those black plastic OEM they shipped them with)... the Rock is a solid 1911. I know now, although I haven't fired mine too much, that it seems to be a shooter; and I like many things about it: flat mainspring housing, vertical slide grips, military sights (not three-dot combats like my Springers), the more 1911 vs. 1911A1 long trigger, the different ejector port cutout, and of course those grips. And, haven't had a prob so far with that 8-round Novaks mag. But, limited rounds, so far.

Up-front price for my two, was just over $ 305.00 each, with shipping, not counting my FFL's fee. They were both new in box, as well. Both Parked, one (my dad's) with ss barrel. I'm about as proud of my Rock (or, according to the case, "Twin Pines") 1911 as I am with my Springers, actually. Not to say anything bad about Springers--my ss one ran circles around a bunch of other brands a while back on the range--but, actually? My Rock is as valued as a shooter and trusted sidearm, as my Springers. And they're actually more "mil-spec", than my Mil-Specs. Solid, basic, functional, and beautiful.

Y'all all take care and be safe.

I love my Rock Island/Armscor 1911. I have put 1250 rounds more or less through it since I bought it in June of 05. The only 4 things I have changed on it is the Barrel pin (too loose), the sights (just wanted comp sights), and the beavertail (the OEM was too sharp for firing 300rd a session), and relieved the feed ramp (caused the slide to need a forward assist after inserting fresh new mag). Other than that, it was worth the $350 I bought it for brand new.

Welcome 1911 Lover!!
You got the treatment right off, but it's just to make you feel at home.
Great bunch of Guys & Gals here on this forum.
I tried to explain to them a while back that I couldn't post Pix, because I spend all my extra $$ Denero$$ on pistols and just don't have a "Fancy New Camera"
I tried to work something out with Santa, but he didn't cooperate either.
Welcome aboard.
Mid 70's and Sunny Tomorrow!!
1 Rock, & 2 "SS" Springers

Here is my relieved Feed ramp that I did at 500+rounds. DO NOT DO THIS UNTIL YOU HAVE 500+ rounds through the gun. I did using a dremel rip off and a blue polish cone. Take a little off at a time!!!
1. Take apart the gun.
2. Keep barrel, receiever, slide stop, and a snap cap round in a magazine (saftey first!) to perform this task.
3. Take the mate barrel up with receiver and insert slide stop into normal place.
4. Now take snap cap and magazine, instert into magazine well
5. Push and note at the same time where the bullet is catching in the feeding ramp area and adjust with dremel tool accordingly.
6. TAKE YOUR TIME
7. Assemble gun and find nearest range or area to ops check your gun
8. If there are any problems, just repeat process or talk to qualified gunsmith if you don't want to mess it up.

Amen, Rusty, 1911 Lover, All...

Cannot remember if I posted photos elsewhere of my own Rock, but, here it is:

As much as I love my two Springers, I also love this little beauty. My dad obviously loved his, as well... he is a wounded WWII vet, and it was an appropriate Christmas gift on the 60th anniversary of WWII ending. Rock on... literally.

Y'all all take care.

Hi guys,

I just purchased a new RIA .45.

Brought it home, and replaced the stock hammer with a broader 1911 hammer from the WW1 era, manufacture unknown. Also replaced the mainspring with one with a lanyard loop.
Subsequent to this, when the slide is let loose from being locked open, with a charged magazine in place, and with an empty magazine in place, the hammer will often follow the slide to the half-cock position.

This same hammer did work fine in my brother's Springfield 45.

I quick comparision of both hammers at the initail switch did not reveal any dramatic difference, but I have yet to examine both side by side with a magnifying glass.

Have placed the origiinal hammer back in the gun, and it is now fine. it would appear the some part of the hammer is to blame. What surface, nock, and-or cranny would be responcible for the malfunction.

I would prefer the correct the problem and reinstall the broader back into the weapon.

Whatcha think?
