I have an original Colt m1911 and I need to find a set of vintage grips. Its serial number reveals that its from the year 1918. I was wondering where the best place to find them are. I've seen them on Ebay, but dont really know if its a good place to look. Also, if anyone knows the correct amount of diamonds between the two larger diamonds I would appreciate the number.

Thanks

15 rows of checkering between the large diamonds (+/- 1 row). Finding a pair that match the condition of your pistol may be difficult. Some companies have reproductions. Hogue, Cylinder & Slide, Doug Turnbull are a few of them.

So is Ebay a bad place to look?

There's a nice pair on Ebay right now. The downside to an auction is there always seems to be someone willing to bid any amount to get a set for their pistol. Several vintage used sets I've seen at the last few Tulsa shows have been $100 - $200 or more, depending upon condition and maker.

Not necessarily bad, but I have noticed that some folks selling there kinda plead ignorance about authenticity, while I suspect they know better.
A pair of grips (with correct wear and checkering) just sold for about $170 on E-bay
