View Full Version : What method for Gun and Sheath Knife Carry?

As my 'daily' carry setup I carry a pistol on my belt on the right side, an extra mag in my left pocket, and up until recently a Benchmade folder clipped in the right pocket. This setup works well for me for concealability and accessibility. But recently I picked up the nicest little Anza knife (http://www.anzaknives.com/) at a gun show and am thinking about carrying that instead of the Benchmade.
I'm thinking that 99.9% of the time my knife is used for utility purposes anyway so i probably don't really need a "tactical" folder, and for that other .01% of the time thats why the pistol is there.
But the problem is that I end up wanting to carry the gun and the sheath knife in the same place. It seems to fit well with the gun slightly farther than halfway back on my hip and the knife just foreword of the gun, but then every time I draw the knife, my concealed pistol is exposed.
I would just get a shoulder rig for the pistol, but it wouldn't work with my usual mode of dress. (i.e. long-ish button down shirt untucked, draped over the belt and its contents.)

If anyone else has run into this kind of problem and come up with a workable solution, i'd be glad to hear it.

I would suggest trying to find one of the polymer scabards that you can carry horizontally on your belt on the week side. If I had to carry a knife like that that's how I'd do it.

Just an idea, but an ankle strap or scuba diver type sheathing on the leg might be your ticket.

Its an interesting idea I hadn't considered, but as the knife i'd like to carry is pretty much non-tactical and non-factory mass produced, i'd have to find somebody who custom molds kydex or similar material.

But I might be defeating my purpose to go to all that trouble. The knife in question isn't really intended to be concealed. Its just a utility blade, very similar to Anza's T12 or T6 model. In fact it may actually increase the pistol's concealment factor to keep the knife in plain view. Sort of a concealment through misdirection. Everyone is too busy looking at your knife to notice you might have a gun.

But I like Moose's idea with horizontal weak side carry for the knife. Since its my working blade, (the knife is primarily employed in whittling wood, stripping wire, and opening packages of beef jerky), speed of deployment probably isn't a factor. In most situations, drawing the knife with the weak hand and switching to the other hand isn't a problem. I'll have to see about modifying the existing leather sheath to fit that configuration.

Try using velcro through the belt hole, and then tape or glue some more onto the bottom of the sheath to make it sideways carry if that's what you want. Basicaly just make a belt loop with it or a similar thing you could even use string or rubber bands if you wanted too.
